04 Jul Vegan Celebs
We tend to look at celebrities as better versions of us regular people – but when it comes to choosing what we put in our bodies, we have just as much say as they do. As it becomes more and more clear how beneficial eating vegan is for our health, and as it becomes more trendy, celebrities from all walks of life are adopting the diet, each for their own reasons. Thanks Bustle for these celebrity insights!
Many change their eating habits for the sake of their own health. Clueless star, Alicia Silverstone, for example, has maintained a vegan diet since 1998 when she was just 21 years old. For years she battled chronic health problems such as asthma, constipation, acne, insomnia, and brittle hair and nails. She says,
“I feel better about myself as a person, being conscious and responsible for my actions … I just became stronger and healthier and happier.”
A role model for all of us, Joaquin Phoenix has been vegan since age three. I like to think of him as the father of vegan trendiness – his narration of Earthlings, a documentary showing the horrors animals endure in factory farms, breeding mills, and laboratories was so powerful that it converted many, including Ellen Degeneres. One of his more famous quotes is:
“It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal”
And we certainly appreciate his sentiment.
Miley Cyrus has always been a celebrity that keeps up with every trend – and veganism was not lost on her. She has been vegan for about four years now, and credits her pet fish and pig for inspiring her switch. She tells Jimmy Fallon on his show that her blowfish would get visibly excited when she got home, and she realized that this was an intelligent animal. Needless to say, she skipped the sushi next time she went out to eat. Last year, she penned a significantly controversial statement on Instagram reading:
“If you choose to eat meat …. you love PETS not ANIMALS.”
Pop star Ariana Grande has also adopted a vegan diet, claiming that, “I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person.”
Eating vegan has not been her only action towards protecting animals – she was one of the many celebrities that were vocal and public about their distaste for SeaWorld after the popular documentary Blackfish was released.
Last but certainly not least, actor Woody Harrelson has been vegan for over ten years now. He says, “Really, my message is simple. It’s a message of compassion. In this world that is spinning madly out of control, we have to realize that we’re all related. We have to try to live harmoniously.”
Of all the quotes we have visited, this one is our favorite. Choosing a meat or animal product-free lifestyle is not only a choice to look out for ourselves, but it also shows consciousness about the state of the world we live in. One simple decision made by a single individual can positively impact the lives of thousands of livestock animals, reduce the amount of waste produced annually, and free up crucial land for other uses, such as crop farming.
